It’s been a turbulent year, and the future is uncertain. However, we’re all trying to retain a degree of normality in a world that’s been turned upside down. One thing for sure is that many of us will never take ‘normal’ for granted again, so what important lessons has the Covid-19 pandemic taught us about the way we do business?
• Remote working
Face-to-face meetings are a thing of the past, at least for now, and working from home has become the norm for many. Despite this, thanks to technology we’re more connected than ever before, communicating through a wide range of online and social platforms that enable us to come together without being in the same building.
• Crisis and contingency planning
Covid-19 is a global crisis on an unprecedented scale. Many businesses were unprepared for its impact, and therefore very quickly had to develop and roll-out new ways of operating. If there’s one thing to learn from this, it’s that crisis and contingency plans should be a must-have, rather than an afterthought.
• Learning and growth
This year’s change of course has left many companies struggling, and it’s now a case of the survival of the fittest. Putting things on hold until normality returns is not a viable option, and those who have used their time most wisely will almost certainly have invested in training and development, strengthening existing skills or learning new ones to stand them in good stead as we look to the future.
• Adaptability
From restaurants switching to takeaway meals and distilleries producing hand sanitiser to manufacturing companies turning their hand to the production of protective screens, the Covid-19 pandemic has presented unexpected opportunities for many businesses. Adaptability and flexibility are key attributes at the best of times, but perhaps now they are proving to be more important than ever.
• Adding value
Consumers and businesses alike are feeling the pinch financially at the moment, but it’s the companies that have focused on delivering added value for their customers during this time that will undoubtedly benefit in the longer-term, through feelings of increased loyalty. One good turn deserves another, and this feels particularly apt as we all work together to get through these tough times.
